2020 grantmaking in numbers

The main activity of iCS is to support projects, programs and institutions through grants. Here we present a brief retrospective of the grants made in 2020 – as can be seen, there was significant growth in all areas.

iCS strategic planning for 2021-22

In the last months of 2020, iCS has been focusing on its planning for the next two years. The plan was presented to the board and approved in December.

Letter to the Minister of Economy

Just before Christmas, the Ministry of Economy canceled a public consultation to review the basic production process (BPP) of split air conditioners produced in the Manaus Free Trade Zone. The Kigali Network sent a letter requesting explanations.

The summer air

A report on the evening news, Jornal Nacional, talks about the increase in the consumption of air conditioning and its impact on the electricity bill. IEI explained the campaign [Keep Track of your Air Conditioning Bill].

Energy efficiency in building

The Efficient Cities project, of the Brazilian Council for Sustainable Construction, attended an important meeting with entities from the construction sector in Florianópolis about energy efficiency in the building code.

TRANSPORT

E-BUS RADAR for Latin America

New version of the platform went live in December with the objective of monitoring the electric bus fleets in operation in Latin America and quantifying their avoided emissions.

Sustainable mobility events

Two events supported by iCS show the impacts of the sustainable mobility policies on public health and air quality. This is a matter of urgency.

The “new” Brazilian NDC – what does it mean?

The new Brazilian Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in the Paris Agreement was sent to the UNFCCC, but what does this mean? Several civil society institutions have been critical.

The NDC proposal of the OC

On December 7, the Climate Observatory, a network of 56 civil society organizations, published a suggestion of a much more ambitious Brazilian NDC; the government did not follow its recommendation.

5 years of the Paris Agreement

To reflect on the date and to reinforce the importance of the subnational governments in the reduction of emissions, the CDP organized, with the support of iCS, a webinar with an exchange of experiences and learning.

LAND USE

6 out of 10 workers in the Amazon are informal

Research that forms part of the Amazon 2030 project shows that deforestation does not contribute to the generation of employment and income in the region, on the contrary – the gap from the rest of the country is enormous.

Payment for Environmental Services

Only presidential sanction is missing so that PL 5028/19, which is intended to conserve preservation areas by payments to rural, indigenous, quilombola and traditional communities, becomes law.

OCAA

The Observatory for Trade and Environment in the Amazon (OCAA) has been launched. It is the result of a partnership between four institutions to offer clear and reliable data about trade in the region and its impacts.

Quilombola students

They are the leading figures of research coordinated by Neabi in Tabuleiro dos Negros with a focus on the climate dynamics and their relationship with agricultural practices, which forms part of a larger project.

GRANTS APPROVED IN DECEMBER 2020

IEI-Brasil

Duration: 12 months
Portfolio: Energy
Purpose of the grant: To review the labeling of household refrigerators in Brazil and bring it closer to best international practices. The project also inaugurates the formal transition of the coordination of the Kigali Project to the IEI.

Coelho & Vasques Advogados

Duration: 12 months
Portfolio: Climate Policy and Outreach
Purpose of the grant: The project seeks to produce a collective publication that brings together contributions from civil society about the discussions that emerged with the filing of an action against the violation of a constitutional fundamental right (ADPF) 708, whose object is the omission of the federal government in the management of the Climate Fund. The starting point of the project are the contributions presented by civil society at the public hearing held by the STF.

MANDACARU (WDCD)

Duration: 6 months
Portfolio: Low Carbon Economy
Purpose of the grant: To engage creative designers in the development of solutions for waste and to leverage the circular economy, the NO WASTE Challenge will take place simultaneously in various cities. The project covers the phase of Research and Mapping and includes experts from several areas – government, academia, environmental organizations, civil society and the creative community.

Lab OC

Duration: 12 months
Portfolio: Climate Policy and Outreach
Purpose of the grant: To strengthen the legal capabilities of a key actor in the Brazilian climate field, in order to contain setbacks in the environmental and climate governance and to restore the effectiveness of public policies. The project seeks to consolidate the strategic and combined use of social and political advocacy with strategic litigation in the realization of national and international objectives regarding climate change.
